I have been a follower for many years now and wanted to take the next step and contribute. Around the same time I stumbled across your blog, I began experimenting with shipping pallets. Being a carpenter by trade, I already possessed the skills to build, but pallets are a whole different ball game. When building with pallets, one cannot just draw up plans and expect everything to work. Pallets need to be looked at as building blocks, like Legos for example. Drawing up plans is still a good idea, but the dimensions and structural integrity of pallets needs to be the main factor in design.

pallet hen house framed

Before, I started building; I needed to find sources to obtain my pallets. The most common pallet can be found behind almost every store and it measures 4ft by 45 inches. It consists of 3 parallel 2x4s with 1x planks running perpendicular. These pallets are normally reused over and over and are riddled with nails. The wood is grade “d” lumber at best and is hard to drive a nail into. However, there are treasures out there; I have found many mahogany pallets and oak pallets. With some dedication, the wood can be reclaimed.

pallet hen house

There are also pallets that I call, “one time use pallets.” These have all different dimensions that are based on the product that is being shipped. For instance, Motorcycles, Tractors, wood stoves, windows, furniture…etc, all have unique pallets. A lot of these pallets are constructed out of premium 2x4s and 2x6s, all held together with screws and bolts. This lumber can be reclaimed much easier and even hardware can be reused. At a local glass company I can gather 8ft x 12ft pallets, all made out of southern yellow pine. NOTE: Always get permission before taking pallets, some have deposit costs attached to them.

pallet hen house back

After collecting a dozen truck loads, I had enough pallets to begin experimenting. I took an inventory of what I had and recorded the individual dimensions of each pallet. I also took note of which direction the 2x4s ran, being that they are the main support. I had seen a couple people attempt to build chairs out of pallets online, so I started with that. The first one I built was just to get an idea of what I could do with the least amount of work. The next involved a little more effort and the third was actually built by deconstructing pallets and reusing the wood.

hen house door

From what I learned in making chairs, I took my new knowledge and attempted to build a small structure. At a Harley Davidson dealership I found a 4 ft x 8 ft pallet made of 2 x 6s and heavy 1 x 6s. I used this as my base. I covered it with a sheet of plywood and leveled it on top of cinderblocks. Then I began to frame the walls. For the back wall I used another 4 ft x 8 ft pallet made of 2 x 4s. I cut a 4 ft x 45 inch pallet in half and stacked this on top. The front walls were constructed out of two 2 ft x 6 ft pallets with a door opening between them. The side walls were made of heavy duty 3 ft x 3 ft pallets that had 4 x 4s holding them together.

pallet chair construction

I added some reclaimed 2 x 4s to finish the rough framing. The roof was made of three 5 ft x 45 inch pallets, and then covered with plywood. The roofing is actually made of sheet metal from a newspaper printing facility. A raw piece can be seen in front of the door opening on the ground. I constructed a door out of reclaimed 2 x 4s and added a recycled window. From a demo job at work, I got a truck load of foot wide pine floor boards. They were already stained and had a nice weathered look to them. I nailed these to the frame as siding. Since pallets aren’t perfectly square, neither was my structure, so some custom skill saw rips were needed to make the siding work.

pallet chair

I then attached some more 5 ft x 45inch pallets as a second foundation to the back and leveled them on cinderblocks. Using more reclaimed lumber I built another frame. Then roofed with more pine floor boards. At this point, I decided to make my structure into a chicken coop. This new section would act as a covered run for my chickens. I built a larger run out of more reclaimed 2 x 4s and wrapped everything in chicken wire.

pallet chairs on porch

Other than some hardware and two sheets of plywood, the entire structure was made of recycled materials. This was last spring’s project and since then I have been collecting more raw materials. This spring I am going to attempt to make an 8 ft x 8ft structure out of mostly pallets. As soon as I have something made, I plan on showing it to all of you at tinyhouseblog.com. If you have any questions or want to talk pallets, feel free to contact me at artcalderone@hotmail.com.

Gardening in Central Florida: Pallet planter

Post image for How to Turn a Pallet into a Garden

I don't do a lot of reposting, but this idea of using a pallet as a sort of tiered mulitpot is really smart. I like in particular the fact that you could tilt it, overcoming the problem of plants casting shadows on plants below them. Watering would be tough, particularly in late spring and summer. But it would work very well in the winter/spring period if you were willing to hand-water the lower tiers. I imagine chard and small greens (Tuscan kale, say) on top, mixed lettuce greens below that, then herbs and finally nasturtiums and small, mounding flowers flowing out of the bottom rung. Very pretty, and very efficient use of space.

I would definitely use a well-drained mix, in any case. And perhaps lining the back not with cloth but with a thin plastic sheet, with abundant holes in the lower tiers to encourage wicking downward, then upward.

Spill Pallet How To Store Liquid Gold | Free Online Articles

Some of the spill pallet is made of 100% polyethylene material and they are resistant to most chemicals, which includes caustics and acids. There is ultra spill pallet with a drain material that offers additional advantage for maintaining the safety of the employees because the position of the containers is kept just below the eye level. This in turn reduces the danger of splashes, which might damage the face, and eyes of the employees. When there is transfer going on for hazardous chemicals then you need to be very careful during that time. These containers are having a unique design that allows multiple pallets to be stacked together for shipping and storing purposes.

When you think of storing such containers, they require a negligible amount of space. There are optional ramps that are helpful in loading and unloading of containers. Such containers are having a 66-gallon sump capacity and the load capacity of such gallons is quite huge. There are poly spill pallets that have a secondary containment system that is made of durable polyethylene and has a removable grate for the easy cleaning of the sump. Such sumps can be lifted and moved about as needed with a forklift.

An oil bund is a place that is constructed for the easy storing of the liquid gold. These bunds are constructed according to the availability of the land. This does mean that the place should be ideally positioned for the erection of such oil bunds. The oil pallets are made of long containers that are placed on a straight row in place of a square form. These containers can be easily fitted up along a wall or in a narrow area and is made of polyethylene materials. The grates are sturdy and can be detached easily for cleaning. The spill pallet may vary in size, load bearing and sump capacity as well. Polyethylene is the only material that is used for the manufacturing of sump pallets of different sizes and types that are available within the range. Such pallets are durable, lightweight and have highly impact resistance so they add to their long life.

AB 1583 New California Legislation Targets Pallet Theft - Reusable ...

Pallet and container theft in California has been an ongoing problem, as we were reminded of with the most recent pallet theft arrests by the plastic industrial theft task force. New legislation has been introduced in California, presumably with the intent to deter pallet theft in that state.

California state assembly member Roger Hernández has introduced AB 1583. According to the proposed legislation, “This bill would prohibit junk dealers and recyclers from purchasing or receiving merchandise pallets, as defined, marked with an indicia of ownership, as defined, from anyone except the indicated owner, unless specified information is provided to the junk dealer or recycler, and would require the junk dealer or recycler to maintain a written record of that information.”

To reiterate, if the seller is not the indicated owner, “a junk dealer or recycler may purchase or receive merchandise pallets only if the seller or transferor provides a receipt from the indicated owner verifying the seller’s current ownership or a document indicating that the seller or transferor is authorized by the indicated owner to sell or transfer the merchandise pallets.”

The intent of this legislation is good news for the many companies that have pallets stolen in California. It would, however, cause paperwork headaches for legitimate pallet recyclers who receive loads of used pallets on a daily basis from sources such as consumer products distribution centers, including some pallets with company names stenciled or branded.

Additionally, if the new legislation turned out to be successful in dissuading pallet pickers from recovering owner branded pallets, this could result in more pallets left stacked in alleys and leaning against walls – great for reducing pallet theft but not without other potentially expensive complications. Be careful what you wish for, as they say. With legislation or without, an effective reusables management program remains an essential best practice enhanced, but certainly not replaced by legislation.

Palette vs. Pallet vs. Palate

by Mark Nichol

Palette, pallet, and palate are three similar words sharing (in most senses) a common etymology that can trip writers up. Here’s a guide to the distinctions in meaning, plus a look at other distantly related words:

If you were to describe a traditional image of the artist at work, you and I would likely note the same tropes: the beret, the smock, the painter squinting one eye as he looks down his outstretched arm at his model or subject next to his upraised thumb or paint brush (a strategy that helps him determine proportions).

And in his other hand would be a flat, oval board, held with a handy thumb hole, with small, variously colored glops of paint — a palette. The name of this handy paint-mixing surface comes from French (certainement!) — the original meaning was “blade” or “small shovel” — and ultimately derives from the Latin term pala, meaning “shoulder blade” or “spade.” Palette, by association, later came to refer to the range of colors employed in a work of art or, later, available in analog and then digital graphic design. Several other, more obscure senses exist.

A pallet, meanwhile, is a flat structure made of wooden slats (or, increasingly, other materials), used to support heavy items in storage and when hauling freight, or a wooden tool used in pottery or a flat component in an analog clock that sets it in motion. In heraldry, pallet denotes a vertical band of color. These meanings derive from the “blade” sense of palette. The same word used to refer to a crude bed or mattress, the latter generally stuffed with straw, is unrelated.

The palate, the name of the roof of the mouth, is also of Latin origin: Palatum means just that. (Oddly, the palate, rather than the tongue, was long considered the medium by which taste is experienced, hence the use of the word to mean “sense of taste.”) The adjective palatable means “tasty.” Another adjective, palatine, used in anatomy to identify, for example, the palatine bone, is unrelated to the identical-looking word derived from palace.

Plate and its many forms are only tangentially related to this trio. Taken as is from French, it originally meant “a flat piece of metal,” ultimately from the Greek word platys, meaning “flat,” which was borrowed by Latin as plattus. The sense of a shallow dish is from the fact that such utensils were originally made of precious metals; one meaning of plate, singular in construction but plural in meaning, to refer to valuable dishes retains this sense.

Words with the same origin as plate include plateau, platelet (literally, “little plate”), platen, platform, platinum, platitude, platter, and platypus (literally, flat foot”).

Pallet Compost Bin- Hill helps emptying

most compost bins are on flat ground. our yard is hilly and we have a small (.25acre) yard. not much room.

by cutting the sides at an angle to match the hill,  the compost bin is set into the hill.
it is anchored with metal stakes, and pieces of rebar driven into the ground. it is held together with coat hangers.

the lowest 2 boards in front come off so the oldest stuff at the bottom can be used in a small amount, or just dug out and thrown on top to turn or aerate it. to empty it, the whole front comes off, and it is easy to park a wheelbarrow edge just below it.

sorry only 2 pics to show it, but i hope you dont need a step-by-step to build.  this just shows the overall design idea, as displayed by my very proud helper.

One version of a post and beam pallet wall using girts for added strength to support earth berming. (click to enlarge)

One of the best benefits of doing this blog is having the opportunity to network with other natural builders. Loads (thousands of people) send us info on their projects, ask questions and share their ideas. Some of the best ideas you see on our blog have come about through this brainstorming process. We share them here for the world to see.

A while back I got an email from Rex, a reader who’s planning an ultra-low cost home in Texas. We exchanged a few emails and each time he would ask if it’s possible to further reduce the cost. He said “Owen, I have pallets, cedar poles from my land and dirt.” His persistence in lowering costs had me racking my brain for cost cutting ideas. Rex’s original plan was to build an earth lodge. Now he’s planning a rectangular design that he thinks will be simpler and easier to build. The latest cost estimate for his 800 sq. ft. earth-bermed house design is around $1,600. That’s only $2/sq. ft.! Time will tell if he can actually build at that cost. Lots of small costs quickly add up and you almost always end up spending more than planned. Rex is certainly determined though and off to a good start. He’s already gathered most of his materials and hopes to start soon.

The drawing above shows one possible pallet wall building system, although it differs somewhat from Rex’s design. He has extra strong pallets and doesn’t need girts. He might add a horizontal plate between courses of pallets just to be on the safe side. Most people, however, don’t have access to these unusually strong pallets, and so girts are recommended to help withhold the pressure of an earth berm. (See Pallet Houses and Interior Pallet Walls if you don’t have bermed walls.) The girts also create extra space for insulation, facilitate installation of plumbing and electrical, and serve as nailers for barnwood wall cladding or other materials. And note the horizontal cedar poles at the bottom that the pallets are nailed to. This is a good application of rot resistant cedar wood (juniper), and it demonstrates another way to gain a lot of strength inexpensively.

More from Rex:
“At the moment I’m looking at a 24′x30′ (720 sq ft) post and beam (juniper) earth bermed pallet wall house with clerestory windows and 80 sq ft loft for a total of 800 sq ft. Connected to the loft, access via sliding glass door, will be a deck (100 sq ft.). I may screen it in and turn it into a sleeping ‘porch’. There will be a porch below.

Total cost projections are still up in the air due to the different possibilities for exterior cladding, etc. If one were to take the concept we have discussed, use reclaimed materials for the exterior (pallet planking for cladding or reclaimed sheet metal), earthen plasters or wood cladding for the interior, then one could build at around 2 bucks a sq ft and that includes new sheet metal for the exterior roof. Depending upon which elements we decide to reclaim or buy new the house will cost us between $2-$4 sq ft to build. New items don’t have to break the bank. We got our clerestory windows from Lowes on clearance for $25 per.” [Note: This is common. People order products that they never pick up. Check your building supply stores often for discounts like this! Sometimes there’s just a tiny ding or scratch and the product is drastically reduced in price.]

AB 1583 New California Legislation Targets Pallet Theft | Packaging ...

March 28, 2012 by

Pallet and container theft in California has been an ongoing problem, as we were reminded of with the most recent pallet theft arrests by the plastic industrial theft task force. New legislation has been introduced in California, presumably with the intent to deter pallet theft in that state.

California state assemblymember Roger Hernández has introduced AB 1583.

Portable Stack Rack Offers Alternative to Pallet Usage | Packaging ...

March 28, 2012 by

(openPR) – Tier-Rack factories are humming so far this year filling stacking rack orders coming in at a pace reminiscent of a few years ago.

Tier-Rack® portable racks are used by thousands of customers in hundreds of industries. Some customers use the portable stacking rack as standard warehouse racks, or as a stacking bin. In this case they place their product directly on our mobile rack and save the cost of wooden pallets.

The protection provided by the corner posts of the portable rack is a primary benefit. Bulky or hard-to-stack products are contained within the corner posts of the mobile storage racks. This provides stability for goods on the portable pallet when moving it within the warehouse or factory.

Others who use wood pallets and need to stack without causing product damage find that our Tier-Rack® Pallet Stacking Frames fits their needs. The steel frame of the Tier-Rack® stacking rack clips onto the wood pallet, providing a secure “cage” that both allows the pallets to be safely stacked and protects the products within the rack enclosure.

Another use of portable storage racks is for handling work-in-process parts; a metal bin that holds several parts at one time, reducing plant traffic. They are custom racks designed to meet your needs, whether the parts to be handled are delicate or massive. Usually, these parts racks are designed as folding racks or collapsible racks.

Tier-Rack Corp. manufactures and markets portable stack racks for warehousing and shipping in our 2 wholly owned facilities. For more information, visit www.tier-rack.com.

Shakyard » A Pallet Garden for Mom

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, my sister and I are “plotting” to build our mom a pallet garden.  She always loved gardening, but as she has gotten older it’s been difficult for her.  With a pallet garden, our mom will be able to easily keep the weeds at bay while growing the vegetables she loves.

From The Micro Gardener, here are 20 Creative Ways to Upcycle Pallets in Your Garden,

An amazing quantity of food can be grown in a one square metre pallet garden. This one is intensively planted with luscious veggies!

This will be a fun project!

Shipping Pallet Garden Wows Visitors at the Canada Blooms ...

Pallet Garden, BSQ Design, shipping pallets, shipping pallet garden, canada blooms, landscape architecture

For their 5th annual installation at the 2012 Canada Blooms Garden Festival, b sq. Design Studio set out to do something a little different. They decided to take a common material, one that people see everyday, and use it to create something beautiful. The Toronto firm also wanted to show off their skills using uncommon materials and be able to dismantle the project and reuse the materials. Shipping pallets were readily available and became the building blocks for their installation, Plug and Play – the Pallet Garden.

In total, the firm used 105 shipping pallets that were all 5” high, 40” wide and 48” long. They built walkways, planter walls, a 12’ high playhouse with a roof deck, a water feature and a series of freestanding pallet herb gardens. The playhouse features a counter area where adults can entertain and the structure is sturdy enough to double as a climbing wall for children to play on. Visitors were delighted with the garden and surprised when they realized it was made out of pallets. In addition to the garden, b sq Design Studio also had on hand, their 20′ mobile shipping container project office. At the end of the show, the entire installation was dismantled with the pallets returned to warehouses and the plant materials will be relocated into permanent locations throughout Toronto.
